Team KGF to compete at Commonwealth Games

England’s team roster for the 2018 Commonwealth Games has been released, and few will be surprised to see riders from Team KGF listed among those who will be racing.

Following a year of increasingly impressive results, from National Championships, to World Cups, and finally a World Championships, the amateurs from KGF have been a refreshing (and inspiring) sight on the world stage.

The KGF riders named for the Commonwealth Games are brothers Charlie and Harry Tanfield, and Dan Bigham. Charlie Tanfield picked up a rainbow jersey last month in the team pursuit as well as finishing 4th in the individual pursuit, so is rapidly turning from underdog to one of the favourites. In addition, Dan Bigham became proud owner of an astonishing eight national titles in various time trial disiplines in 2017.

It’s always excellent to see riders find international success outside of national federation teams and development squads – not least during a time when our national team’s reputation is on shaky ground – and KGF’s low-budget approach is exactly the antidote we needed in contrast to the closed doors and secrecy around many teams competing at this level.

More to come… and I can’t wait.
